Dementia Is Not Only Alzheimer’s Disease

A lot of people think that dementia and Alzheimer’s are synonymous, but Alzheimer’s is just one condition that can cause dementia. Dementia is a descriptive term that covers impaired memory and the loss of other cognitive abilities.

Treatable Types of Dementia

Some types of dementia are caused by health factors and can actually be reversed. These include dementia caused by:

  • Alcohol or drug abuse
  • Tumors
  • Blood clots of the brain
  • Normal-pressure hydrocephalus (fluid buildup in the brain)
  • Metabolic disorders (including deficiencies)
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Hypoglycemia
  • HIV/AIDS-associated neurocognitive disorders
